SELF Evaluation Made Simple
This self evaluation toolkit has been devised at the request of school heads and senior leaders. It aims to simplify the latest updated Estyn framework for 2024-2030 into an easy-to-understand format that stakeholders can use to help them make accurate judgments as part of the vital school self-evaluation process.
This has been produced for Schools and PRUs using the Estyn Guidance “Inspections for the future” documents:
- What we inspect: Maintained schools and pupil referral units
- How we inspect (the inspection process): Maintained schools and pupil referral units
The content of these booklets is taken directly from the above documents. However, it has been altered to be viewed in a more user-friendly format, which includes self-evaluation statements, written according to the Estyn writing guide, which can be directly copied and pasted into your SEF to give heads and senior leaders a secure starting point for self-evaluation. This document can also be a key part of making the self-evaluation cycle collaborative.
SELF Evaluation Made Simple could be used in the following ways:
- A prompt for discussion between the challenge advisor and the schools’ leaders on the effectiveness of the school’s self-evaluation process.
- Aid school leaders in considering how accurate their self-evaluation process is.
- A prompt for discussion in staff meetings, ensuring all staff have a clear understanding of how well they understand the school’s performance in all areas of the common inspection framework.
- Share with governors, ensuring they clearly understand where the school is on its self-improvement journey.
- This toolkit could be delegated to a staff member responsible within this area or divided between the senior leadership team to ensure a distributed approach to tackling each inspection area.
- A starting point for professional dialogue regarding progress and learning in school, across the learning continuum and as a cluster.
