This event focuses on capturing significant moments in learning – what really matters to young children! During the day, we will explore a range of excellent systems for gathering and recording young children’s development, interests and fascinations.

Course objectives

  • highlight the importance of using high quality observations to inform future learning including examples of assessment of, and for learning, which are appropriate for 3-5-year olds
  • reflect on current observation systems and share a range of excellent material which celebrates young children as creative, independent thinkers and learners with a positive disposition to learning
  • draw attention to the role documentation plays in celebrating children’s learning and the power of pupil voice in meaningful contexts
  • share current outstanding learning journal material from recently inspected ‘excellent’ schools which demonstrate how pupil voice shapes the curriculum
  • discuss the role of the Foundation Phase Profile in supporting children’s learning

Course Presenter: Jen Summers

FP PEDAGOGY and PRACTICE - Jen Summers has over 30 years’ experience in primary education. She has taught in and managed two large multicultural nurseries and was a Senior Leader. She is an ‘Associate of the London College of Music’, an experienced musician and a great believer in the creative arts to develop children in the standards agenda. Jen Summers was the Foundation Phase Training and Support Officer for Newport and then part of a vibrant Foundation Phase Team in the EAS Consortium. She worked closely with schools and settings to ensure high quality Foundation Phase provision for all children across the region.  She has delivered extensive training in all aspects of Foundation Phase pedagogy and practice to diverse audiences including head teachers, senior leaders, teachers, teaching assistants, governors as well as staff in non maintained settings. Jen Summers works with schools to promote the development of the whole child through rich, engaging and meaningful experiences where children increasingly take responsibility for their own learning in order to become confident, competent and resilient learners.
