Observation and Assessment in Early Years

‘WATCH, WAIT, WONDER … making learning visible in Early Years’

This event focuses on capturing significant moments in learning – noticing, analysing and responding. What really matters to young children? During the day, we will explore a range of excellent systems for gathering and recording young children’s development, interests and fascinations.

Target Group: Foundation Learning/ARR leaders, Non Maintained Settings, Nursery and Reception Teachers, Teaching Assistants

The course aims to:

reflect on current observation systems and share a range of excellent material (including learning journals and floor books), which celebrate young children as creative, independent thinkers and learners with a positive disposition to learning
draw attention to the role documentation plays in celebrating children’s learning and the power of pupil voice in meaningful contexts

Please bring along anything that you have been using to support initial Early Years assessments to share with colleagues. (e.g. summative statements, observations, planning, learning journals etc.)

Course Presenter: Jen Summers

INFANT PEDAGOGY, CULTURE, PRACTICE (3-7 YEARS) Jen Summers has vast and varied experience in primary education. She has taught in and managed two large multicultural nurseries and was a Senior Leader. She is an ‘Associate of the London College of Music’, an experienced musician and a great believer in the creative arts to develop children in the standards agenda. Jen was the Foundation Phase Training and Support Officer for Newport and then part of a vibrant Foundation Phase Team in the EAS Consortium. She worked closely with schools and settings to ensure high quality Foundation Phase provision for all children across the region. She has delivered extensive training in all aspects of Foundation Phase/Infant pedagogy and practice to diverse audiences including head teachers, senior leaders, teachers, teaching assistants, governors as well as staff in non-maintained settings. Jen works with schools to promote the development of the whole child through rich, engaging and authentic experiences where children increasingly take responsibility for their own learning in order to become confident, competent and resilient learners.
