NEW Coding and Engineering using a Crumble Controller in PS2/PS3

Course date: 29th Mar 2022

Delegates must bring a laptop (PC, Laptop, Mac or Chromebook) to run the free Crumble software. (Does not currently work on tablets or phones)

How can we address Estyn findings that state: ‘in too many schools, pupils’ understanding of ‘systems and control’ is weak’; and address some of the requirements of the Computation is the Foundation for Our Digital World Description of Learning in the Science and Technology AOLE.

This course is suitable for complete beginners and more confident practitioners. All delegates will receive a Crumble Controller. starter pack

Target Group: PS2 Teachers, PS3 Teachers
This NEW course will introduce delegates to Crumble Controller which is an easy to use programmable controller and ideal for complete beginners too. How can we address aspects of the Computation is the Foundation for Our Digital World descriptions of learning in the Science and Technology AoLE and the DCF using the Crumble Controller? The Crumble has been designed to encourage experimenting and tinkering using crocodile leads for easy connection. It is a small circuit board that can be programmed using a computer and the software is free. Children may be familiar with the drag and drop programming language from Scratch, but how can we take this one step further? Course aims to teach delegates:
  • how to drag the blocks to build up a program;
  • how to drive motors forwards and backwards;
  • how to build in components such as tilt switches, toggle switches, push button switches, buzzers, light sensors. motors and LEDS;
  • to ‘follow algorithms to determine their purpose and predict outcomes’;
  • how to explain and debug algorithms;
  • how to design and make some exciting products using the Crumble Controller

Course Presenters: Nerys Tudor Jones, Robert (Bob) Cater MBE

Nerys Tudor Jones

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - Nerys has 20 years teaching experience in Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 in five different primary schools and three authorities. She has been senior leader in 2 and Deputy Head Teacher for 6 years. During this time Nerys Tudor Jones also worked on Welsh Government projects to write new materials and produce resources, including assessments and examples of best practice. She has presented at a Welsh Government conference on cluster, transition and enterprise projects. She has presented at the Birmingham NEC on various successful design and technology projects including food technology, computer aided designs, healthy eating weeks, electrical and computer control. Nerys was invited to represent Wales in the James Dyson Innovation Group, which involved working on an innovative project, incorporating Literacy, Numeracy and thinking skills. Other experience: Nerys’ passion for Design and Technology began in secondary school, where she achieved an ‘A’ grade for Design & Technology at A level, before going on to study at university, completing a 4 year B.Ed specialising in D&T. Nerys Tudor Jones is an author of educational books and was a recipient of a prestigious National D&T teaching award. She has worked on various projects with the Design and Technology Association as her role in the Primary Advisory Group, which includes ‘Projects on a Page’. In addition to working with Collective Learning as a course provider, Nerys is also Primary Consultant in Design & Technology working alongside schools, running INSET and providing support for schools in the effective delivery of D&T. Nerys believes it is an exciting time for Wales with Prof Donaldson’s recommendations recognising the importance of Science of Technology as an AoLE. Search for Courses

Robert (Bob) Cater MBE

STEM / DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
Bob taught for 29 years and before leaving teaching headed a large Design and Technology faculty. From teaching he became a senior lecturer in the education faculty at Sunderland University. Following this Bob was appointed to the Mid Glamorgan Advisory Service. After local government reorganisation, the Advisory Service became the Education and School Improvement Service (ESIS) serving Bridgend, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil and RCT local education authorities. During his time with ESIS he arranged in-service training for teachers, monitored standards in schools and took part in ESTYN inspections. Bob has considerable experience of organising and running in-service courses for teachers at both primary and secondary level. For primary level provision he has often delivered in-school sessions for teachers to observe. He is particularly interested in helping teachers in primary schools to deliver the more challenging parts of the AOLE for Science and Technology including introducing CAD and CAM and computer control. He has delivered training sessions for both ESTYN and OFSTED inspectors on judging standards in the use of CAD and CAM in schools. Bob has received the DATA award for Outstanding Contribution to Design and Technology. He has also been recognised for managing a Technology Enhancement Programme Fellowship Centre and been a tutor on OHMCI primary design and technology courses in Bangor and Cardiff. He was very pleased to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s 2020 Birthday Honours List for services to science.
