Electricity and Electronics at PS2 and PS3

Course date: 15th Nov 2022

Every day, we are surrounded by one of the most important innovations of all time, electricity. While it is a force of energy used all over the world, before discovering it, people had been living for centuries without it, which resulted in a dark world at night (with the exception of a candle here and there) and none of the home comforts we take for granted today.

Nevertheless, even though humans have survived without it, the chances of us thriving without it today is highly unlikely.

This course has expired.
Target Group: PS2 and PS3 teachers
The AoLE for Science and Technology, quite importantly, requires that primary school pupils understand electricity and electronics with PS statements such as:
  • I can describe the factors that affect electrical circuits and this will enable me to change variables and predict what will happen.
  • I can describe how magnetic fields behave and explore a range of practical uses for them.
This course focuses on helping teachers to develop an interest in and understanding of electronics at PS2 and PS3. Participants will be given a presentation containing interesting facts about electricity and electronics. Examples that will be of interest to pupils will be given, for example electronic toys and how an electric guitar works.  A main feature of the day will be practical work to enable participants to construct simple electronic circuits to make functioning electronic products. The content for the day will provide ideas and material for delivering a series of progression steps in teaching about electricity and electronics.

Robert (Bob) Cater MBE

STEM / DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
Bob taught for 29 years and before leaving teaching headed a large Design and Technology faculty. From teaching he became a senior lecturer in the education faculty at Sunderland University. Following this Bob was appointed to the Mid Glamorgan Advisory Service. After local government reorganisation, the Advisory Service became the Education and School Improvement Service (ESIS) serving Bridgend, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil and RCT local education authorities. During his time with ESIS he arranged in-service training for teachers, monitored standards in schools and took part in ESTYN inspections. Bob has considerable experience of organising and running in-service courses for teachers at both primary and secondary level. For primary level provision he has often delivered in-school sessions for teachers to observe. He is particularly interested in helping teachers in primary schools to deliver the more challenging parts of the AOLE for Science and Technology including introducing CAD and CAM and computer control. He has delivered training sessions for both ESTYN and OFSTED inspectors on judging standards in the use of CAD and CAM in schools. Bob has received the DATA award for Outstanding Contribution to Design and Technology. He has also been recognised for managing a Technology Enhancement Programme Fellowship Centre and been a tutor on OHMCI primary design and technology courses in Bangor and Cardiff. He was very pleased to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s 2020 Birthday Honours List for services to science.
