Design and Technology is coming to Saundersfoot Primary School in Pembrokeshire on 10th June.
The morning session will be STEM activities
The afternoon will focus on the progression of textiles.

The AM session will be focused on STEM
This practical session is ideal for increasing the motivation and engagement of all learners.
Practical challenges teach learners to take risks and become more resourceful, independent and innovative.
Problem-solving tasks allow children to develop fine and gross motor skills through relevant and authentic challenges.
Experience and learn how all learners can develop resilience, perseverance, and collaboration through practical challenges that develop analytical and creative thinking.
Learning through failures is a key aspect for any D&T and STEM-based activities and this course will allow delegates to experience this first hand with tasks and ideas that can be implemented with the children back in class.
STEM challenges allow children to apply their Literacy and Numeracy skills in real-life, meaningful contexts.

The PM Textiles session will provide primary teachers with:
Opportunity to learn a range of sewing skills and look at the progression of skills across the primary phase.
An understanding what good practice in textiles could look like across the Primary Phase?
Ideas for what tools and materials could be used from N-Y6 to address the I can statements in the Science and Technology AoLE.
Suggestions for what tools and equipment could be included and the H&S aspects considered.
An understanding of 2D and 3D products that could be designed and made in the classroom.
Suggestions of materials, fastenings, stitching, decorative techniques, cutting and joining techniques.

Course objectives

Course Presenter: Nerys Tudor Jones

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - Nerys has 20 years teaching experience in Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 in five different primary schools and three authorities. She has been senior leader in 2 and Deputy Head Teacher for 6 years. During this time Nerys Tudor Jones also worked on Welsh Government projects to write new materials and produce resources, including assessments and examples of best practice. She has presented at a Welsh Government conference on cluster, transition and enterprise projects. She has presented at the Birmingham NEC on various successful design and technology projects including food technology, computer aided designs, healthy eating weeks, electrical and computer control. Nerys was invited to represent Wales in the James Dyson Innovation Group, which involved working on an innovative project, incorporating Literacy, Numeracy and thinking skills. Other experience: Nerys’ passion for Design and Technology began in secondary school, where she achieved an ‘A’ grade for Design & Technology at A level, before going on to study at university, completing a 4 year B.Ed specialising in D&T. Nerys Tudor Jones is an author of educational books and was a recipient of a prestigious National D&T teaching award. She has worked on various projects with the Design and Technology Association as her role in the Primary Advisory Group, which includes ‘Projects on a Page’. In addition to working with Collective Learning as a course provider, Nerys is also Primary Consultant in Design & Technology working alongside schools, running INSET and providing support for schools in the effective delivery of D&T. Nerys believes it is an exciting time for Wales with Prof Donaldson’s recommendations recognising the importance of Science of Technology as an AoLE. Search for Courses
