Develop high quality Oracy through Thinking Skills

Teaching high quality oracy is the foundation to accelerating pupils’ progress and achieving the four purposes. As a result of the Pandemic many pupils , particularly those made more vulnerable by poverty, have regressed significantly during lockdown. However this one day programme will develop the pedagogy of oracy and critical thinking skills to  help learners to achieve their potential in the new Curriculum for Wales. Through the day we will explore a range of strategies to help pupils develop excellent communication skills;  work collaboratively;  develop critical thinking skills through investigation, discussion and enquiry. This is how to embed oracy across the school.

Target Group: PS2 and PS3 teachers
Course objectives:
  • Build productive talk and effective listening.
  • Promote collaboration through focused group and pair work.
  • Equip pupils with high-quality thinking skills so that they question, debate and judge ideas with confidence.
  • Incorporate thinking protocols into your daily classroom practice.
  •  Consider ways to challenge and engage pupils across the curriculum.

Huw Duggan

LEADERSHIP and MANAGEMENT - Huw is passionate about learning, coaching and facilitation. He advocates an ASK not TELL approach to training. His sessions are engaging, interactive and generally involve lots of post it notes! His areas of expertise are: Teaching and Learning; Developing Pedagogy; Independent and interdependent learning; and of course, ‘closing the achievement gap’. Huw also coaches school leaders and leadership teams. Huw Duggan has worked in a range of roles, in a number of local authorities, and countries. His fascination with education and learning began when he was diagnosed as dyslexic at university, which steered him on his career in to education. This career path began as a learning support assistant in a difficult inner-city school in Leeds, before becoming a qualified teacher, and successful school leader. Eventually he was drawn back to Wales, on secondment, to support the Central South Consortium’s vision of a school led system. Huw is currently educational director of the ‘Right Learning Company’ based in South Wales. He was a Fast Track teacher and one of the youngest deputies to achieve NPQH at 28. Huw ran a cohort 1 teaching school in Oldham where he was responsible for 900 NQTs across the LA; ran Oldham’s teaching pool; facilitated school to school support and developed a highly successful school direct programme with Huddersfield University. As a Strategic Advisor for Central South Consortium, Huw was responsible for effectively developing and communicating the region’s strategy designed to close the achievement gap. As well as challenging and supporting schools in 5 LA’s regarding the performance of FSM pupils and the impact of the Pupil Development Grant. Huw has also worked with OLEVI International as a facilitator and Quality Assurance consultant. Huw Duggan is a qualified Estyn Inspector for the primary sector. Stephanie Vaughan

ENGLISH AND LITERACY - Stephanie Vaughan has been working in education for over 25 years and is an experienced classroom practitioner, who understands the challenges teachers face providing a relevant and purposeful curriculum. She was, until recently, the Literacy Lead Advisor for Swansea; therefore, she has extensive experience of providing training and in-school support for primary teachers in English and whole school literacy. In addition, extensive pupil data from schools across Swansea proves that her training definitely raises standards. Stephanie Vaughan is the author of The Eight Reading Behaviours and The Reading Journey, a new and comprehensive innovative resource that teaches pupils to read with enjoyment and purpose. She has also developed many of her own literacy strategies, such as The Writing Wheel and accompanying activities that help pupils to learn the steps in the writing process. She has written detailed progression models for aspects of reading and writing that help teachers to unpick the LNF. A belief that pupils need to understand how to read and write independently underpins her work and she offers literacy lessons that are enjoyable, interactive, and skill-centred. Stephanie’s training provides teachers with practical, easily implemented, and engaging solutions to literacy problems, and she provides schools with extensive and varied resources, which, according to feedback, have proved extremely popular with teachers and pupils.
