Course objectivesIn his ‘Successful Futures’ Report the ethos, principles and pedagogy of the current FP was identified as a significant strength of current educational practice in Wales. It was recommended that schools build on successful ‘Foundation’ practice into the middle and later years of primary education and beyond. How this works in practice needs to be carefully managed to ensure that transition issues are removed and progression is ensured. Topics covered: What is Donaldson actually saying? What are the key words/messages/principles/findings from Professor Graham Donaldson’s ‘Successful Futures’ Report? This session includes a simplified version of the report which will help schools to familiarise themselves with, plan and deliver the new curriculum effectively. The Year 3 and 4 classrooms What will they look like in practice? What refinements need to be made? What curriculum ‘areas’ do we need to put into these classrooms? How do we promote independent learning here? How do we take the aspects of a successful FP into these classrooms and yet ensure progression? This session includes practical ideas/examples of age appropriate tasks/challenges linked to everyday KS2 topics and ideas for routines to allow them to be completed Bridging the Gap Ensuring that the children from Year 2-3 move smoothly and without barriers is a key aspect of the new curriculum. This needs to be considered carefully and well planned for. There are many, many practical ideas and examples given here that will aid this. This session includes an exemplar transition plan that schools can implement into their own practice What exactly are we supposed to be building on? What does a successful FP look like? What are the key words of successful practice and excellence? How do we take some of these elements of the FP into Y3 and Y4? This session includes many ideas/examples of how the strengths of a successful FP can be incorporated into Y3 and Y4 to allow for consistency while still maintaining progression
Course Presenter: Cath Delve
FOUNDATION PHASE/ OUTDOOR LEARNING/ WHOLE SCHOOL ISSUES - Cath Delve provides training, guidance and support to schools and LEAs all over Wales. Her courses cover a wide range of topics such as creating independent learners, outdoor learning, pupil voice and well-being, raising the attainment of boys, progression in continuous and enhanced provision, planning and the curriculum, being an effective Foundation Phase leader, literacy, numeracy, creativity, assessment, raising standards through display, transition, moving towards the new curriculum, developing the role of support staff and the exemplary delivery of the Foundation Phase. Some of her initiatives such as ‘Freaky Friday,’ ‘Igloo’ and ‘Messy Monday’ have been implemented and used by schools all over Wales and into England. In addition to working for Collective Learning as a course provider she is also an independent educational consultant working alongside many, many schools all over Wales to help them improve their environments, provision, curriculum, everyday practice with a view to raising standards and moving forward in every way.
