NEW Understanding Place Value Progression in the AoLE for Maths and Numeracy

Course date: 17th Mar 2022

It is essential that pupils develop a deep conceptual understanding of place value as it underpins the methods that they use for calculations with larger numbers.

A secure understanding of place value is also crucial for ordering numbers, making measurements and handling money.

The concept of place value is, however, very abstract; therefore, pupils need to develop their understanding through active approaches that use concrete and visual representations of the decimal number system.

Course Presenters: Lynwen Barnsley, Gaynor Murphy

Lynwen Barnsley

MATHEMATICS & NUMERACY – Lynwen Barnsley provides training and support for schools in all aspects of mathematics and numeracy. Lynwen’s training courses focus on the why and how of teaching mathematics, providing practical ideas and approaches that ensure learners “make sense” of maths and develop as independent mathematical thinkers. Her training covers a wide range of ideas and topics, such as developing numerical reasoning, the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach, bar modelling, mastery, problem-solving, mathematical communication and thinking, fluency and flexibility with mathematical ideas, assessment for learning, creativity and using numeracy across the curriculum in meaningful ways. Her Digit Dog character and blog are used in many classrooms to develop mathematical thinking and reasoning in young learners. Lynwen Barnsley also works across the UK as a consultant for Numicon and Inspire Maths (OUP) and has many years experience as a CAME and Let’s Think  tutor. Search for Courses

Gaynor Murphy

MATHEMATICS/ NUMERACY and FINANCIAL LITERACY - Gaynor Murphy has considerable experience of working with primary schools in a variety of contexts to improve the quality of teaching and learning of mathematics. This includes providing subject specific training, support, advice and professional development both centrally and school based. She is passionate about engaging pupils through active, relevant and enjoyable approaches to mathematics which allows them to gain confidence in understanding key mathematical concepts and a deep love of mathematics. She considers developing teachers confidence in use of assessment in classrooms is crucial to raise achievement and ensure every lesson engages all individual pupils at an appropriate level. Through her work with the Welsh Government, Gaynor has trained and supported schools across Wales in various roles. As the primary adviser for the Welsh Financial Education Unit (WFEU) she co-wrote Welsh Government guidance on delivering financial education in schools and provided training and resources for schools across Wales linked to this. Working as a National Support Programme Partner, Gaynor worked with schools nationally supporting teachers, headteachers, teaching assistants and governors in effectively implementing the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF). Gaynor Murphy's experience as an Estyn inspector enabled her to develop the skills to evaluate the quality of provision and to provide advice on effective school improvement. Gaynor Murphy has a Masters degree in Education and holds a NPQH. She is also a Numicon consultant and a Let's Think and PCame tutor and is keen to promote a collaborative problem-solving approach to mathematics. Search for Courses
