‘BRILLIANT BLOCK PLAY – the world through the eyes of the child’

Block play is the perfect way to support the four purposes. It offers a vast range of open-ended experiences, enriches every curriculum area and supports child development. Through block play children may investigate the basic principles of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – not to mention problem solving, thinking and social skills! Block play fosters a child’s natural curiosity.

Target Group: flying start, FP practitioners, NMS, TAs, Teachers
The course aims to:
  • identify the progression of block play from Nursery – Year 2 and beyond
  • provide guidance on how to set up high-quality block play areas ensuring progression across the phase
  • highlight the importance of using open-ended, natural and recycled materials to enhance block play areas
  • draw attention to the role of the adult in this open-ended area of continuous provision
  • share exemplary practice demonstrating the versatility of block play and how it supports all areas of learning
  • hands on workshop and planning using ‘Areas of Learning and Experience’.
Delegates attending the training will be provided with a range of materials to support the setting up of block play areas.

Course Presenter: Jen Summers

INFANT PEDAGOGY, CULTURE, PRACTICE (3-7 YEARS) Jen Summers has vast and varied experience in primary education. She has taught in and managed two large multicultural nurseries and was a Senior Leader. She is an ‘Associate of the London College of Music’, an experienced musician and a great believer in the creative arts to develop children in the standards agenda.   Jen was the Foundation Phase Training and Support Officer for Newport and then part of a vibrant Foundation Phase Team in the EAS Consortium. She worked closely with schools and settings to ensure high quality Foundation Phase provision for all children across the region.  She has delivered extensive training in all aspects of Foundation Phase/Infant pedagogy and practice to diverse audiences including head teachers, senior leaders, teachers, teaching assistants, governors as well as staff in non-maintained settings. Jen works with schools to promote the development of the whole child through rich, engaging and authentic experiences where children increasingly take responsibility for their own learning in order to become confident, competent and resilient learners.   Search for Courses
