Getting to Grips with the ‘Expressive Arts AoLE’  

This programme will give you creative and practical strategies for improving and developing the Expressive Arts in Nursery and Reception. As well as giving comprehensive and inspiring activities for Progress step 1, delegates will also have time to plan collaboratively for this AoLE, and they can link this to other areas of learning. This course will give inspiring ideas for progress step 1 as well as pedagogical strategies to improve progress in this AoLE.

  • considering what things are the same and what are different in Progress step 1
  • considering how we can plan in a cross curricular manner to get the most out of the Expressive arts as a vehicle for engagement and challenge
  • opportunities to plan collaboratively
  • creative methods of recording evidence in the Expressive Arts
  • practical strategies and planning templates

Course Presenters: Huw Duggan, David Powell; Upbeat Music and Arts

Huw Duggan

LEADERSHIP and MANAGEMENT - Huw is passionate about learning, coaching and facilitation. He advocates an ASK not TELL approach to training. His sessions are engaging, interactive and generally involve lots of post it notes! His areas of expertise are: Teaching and Learning; Developing Pedagogy; Independent and interdependent learning; and of course, ‘closing the achievement gap’. Huw also coaches school leaders and leadership teams. Huw Duggan has worked in a range of roles, in a number of local authorities, and countries. His fascination with education and learning began when he was diagnosed as dyslexic at university, which steered him on his career in to education. This career path began as a learning support assistant in a difficult inner-city school in Leeds, before becoming a qualified teacher, and successful school leader. Eventually he was drawn back to Wales, on secondment, to support the Central South Consortium’s vision of a school led system. Huw is currently educational director of the ‘Right Learning Company’ based in South Wales. He was a Fast Track teacher and one of the youngest deputies to achieve NPQH at 28. Huw ran a cohort 1 teaching school in Oldham where he was responsible for 900 NQTs across the LA; ran Oldham’s teaching pool; facilitated school to school support and developed a highly successful school direct programme with Huddersfield University. As a Strategic Advisor for Central South Consortium, Huw was responsible for effectively developing and communicating the region’s strategy designed to close the achievement gap. As well as challenging and supporting schools in 5 LA’s regarding the performance of FSM pupils and the impact of the Pupil Development Grant. Huw has also worked with OLEVI International as a facilitator and Quality Assurance consultant. Huw Duggan is a qualified Estyn Inspector for the primary sector. David Powell; Upbeat Music and Arts

MUSIC - David Powell studied percussion and drum kit at Leeds College of Music followed by a post graduate course at the National Centre for Orchestral Studies, Goldsmith’s College London. On leaving college, David Powell joined the critically acclaimed 50’s R & B band ‘The Big Town Playboys’ touring Britain and Europe and performing alongside Fleetwood Mac and Eric Clapton. His teaching career started as an LA peripatetic teacher in 1989 which led to primary classroom teaching before joining the Gwent Music Service as Assistant Head in 2000. After a very productive and successful period in this role, David realised his passion for inclusivity and access by forming ‘Upbeat Music and Arts’ in 2013 to provide projects, workshops and regular tuition for whole classes of children focussing on high class delivery whilst not losing sight of educating the whole child.  Upbeat has a team possessing a wealth of talented and experienced teachers and facilitators and is developing a portfolio that inspires, invigorates and challenges pupils.  Upbeat has built a reputation for excellent quality, child centred delivery through their constantly evolving portfolio viewable at www.upbeatmusicandarts.co.uk/what-we-do  Our Partners  Search for Courses
