MATHEMATICS and NUMERACY – Helen Thomas has considerable experience of successful classroom teaching and advisory work. She joined the Newport LA mathematics team in 2004 as an advisory teacher and, since 2012 has been a primary mathematics adviser in the South-East Wales Consortium (EAS).
Within this role, Helen has developed and delivered extensive mathematics training to both classroom practitioners and senior managers relating to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. She supports teachers to develop well-crafted, engaging lessons that bring mathematics to life. She also mentors mathematics co-ordinators and those leading numeracy so that they feel confident and equipped to move mathematics forward in their own schools. Her training and coaching sessions are highly regarded by schools as they demonstrate the teaching of mathematics through relevant, every-day contexts that support pupils in making connections in their learning.
In addition to her work throughout the SE Wales region, Helen has led the development of primary exemplification materials for mathematics. This is part of a national programme to increase the rigour and consistency of teacher assessment throughout Wales.
Helen is currently an independent mathematics consultant providing training, support and guidance to schools as they seek to embed numeracy within a ‘purposes-driven’ curriculum and enable learners to enjoy and excel in mathematics.
