Jan Bond

An experienced Secondary Geography Teacher (11-18) of 25 years, including Head of Department, I have extensive experience of specification development and external examining (WJEC), and was the Chief Moderator for KS3 Geography during its development. I am now an Ofqual Consultant reviewing qualifications and scrutinising Awarding Bodies.

I have worked for the last few years as the External Subject Expert for Geography (3-19) at the Department of Education advising the Welsh Government (WG).   As such, I introduced the NC2008 Geography Orders (Wales) and Guidance to advisers and groups of teachers.  I am contributing to wider educational projects with the WG including Developing Thinking and Assessment for Learning leading launch conferences and facilitating workshops for teachers.  I am part of a group working on PISA support materials for schools in Wales, and lead workshops for L.A. Advisers.  I commission and monitor the production of bilingual original Geography Resources for learners in Wales on behalf of WG.  I accredit and scrutinise the procedures of the Awarding Body in Wales for Geography.

I combine this with consultancy delivering INSET to groups of teachers, individual schools and L.A.s to help improve learning outcomes in Geography.  My particular interests are to support teachers in identifying opportunities to use Geography as a stimulating learning context for ‘skill development and progression’, both within the subject and across the curriculum’ (Skills Framework 3-19) also, through developing geographical knowledge and understanding to contribute to ‘learning across the curriculum’ (ESDGC; Curriculum Cymreig; Wales Europe and the World). I have also worked for BBC Wales to develop and review educational resources (GCSE Geog. Bitesize; Human Planet).
